Her family relocated from Baltimore to Edmonds, Washington when she was just six years old. father Jack was a sociologist who worked at the University of Washington as a vice president for internal communications. He later headed the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association as well as Karen, her mom Karen was a special education teacher at Seaview Elementary School in Edmonds. Faris is the older sister of Robert and is an academic and social scientist at the University of California Davis. She was encouraged by her parents to pursue a career as an actor as a young girl. The first time she performed professionally came at age 9 during the three-month run of Arthur Miller's One-Act Danger: Memory! in The Seattle Repertory Theater. Then she was cast as Scout in the stage production To Kill a Mockingbird at the Issaquah Washington, Village Theatre as well as the lead character in Heidi and Rebecca on Our Town. Faris had her first TV appearance in a commercial for frozen-yogurt while she was at Edmonds-Woodway High.
